How much should a German Shepherd cost?

At 8 weeks old, German Shepherd puppies usually range from $600 to $5,000, depending on their bloodline, breed type, show potential, pedigree, etc. Older puppies with additional training from responsible breeders often cost more.

If you are not familiar with the huge differences in shepherds, please reference our article on the different types of German Shepherd Dogs and selecting a German Shepherd breeder.

We’ll start with the cheapest and work our way up.

Rescue Dogs
There are many great rescues that charge a reasonable fee. There are many costs that go into rescuing dogs. I’m not quite certain what adoption fees are, however whatever they are, you are basically supporting the rescue of the dog, be it $75 from an SPCA or $500 from a no-kill shelter. Some shelters specialize in rehabilitating German Shepherds, and this can take a lot of time and money.

American/Canadian Line
This is typically what people are picturing when they hear the term “German Shepherd”. These shepherds should at a very minimum be AKC certified. They range from $200 – $800.

With no paperwork, free might be acceptable if you just want to give a dog a new home. Hopefully the people responsible for their actions would also cover deworming, vaccinations and other fees.

German Working Line
These Shepherds range depending on the breeder, facilities, bloodline, etc. Typically puppies tend to be in the $1000 range. They can be more with additional training. We’ve seen trained working dogs go for $17,000 to the Police Dept down the street and there are breeders in NC who get around $85,000 for specialized dogs.

German Show Lines
These are dogs that adhere to the breed standard and are significantly different animals. While any dog can be an excellent companion, these are beautiful, extraordinary family members with a little less drive than the working line. 7 or 8 week old puppies start off around $2,500 and work their way up to $4,500 depending on the pedigree and titles and awards held. Adults with Schtuzhund training and hip certifications or other titles can easily run into the $10,000 range.

The very first steps to picking out a puppy should first be you determining what it is you would like out of your new puppy. First, determine which German Shepherd type fits you best, then, carefully select a breeder. If you are interested in a show line GSD please visit our German Shepherd puppy page.

I have been told that a German Sheperd WILL not protect its owner unless trained to do so,is this true? Thanks

      Hi David,

It depends. They probably will not. Although, if there were a dog that would do such a thing, it would be a German Shepherd. They form an extremely tight bond with their owner and are protective by nature. That said, I would estimate that over 99% of dogs will not protect their owner (by attacking an intruder for example). Of course, most will naturally bark and make noise if someone pulls in the driveway. Schutzhund training is available to the right dog (typically German working line), and it is a gigantic, ongoing commitment of time. When I last raised pups, Aura passed along many protective traits to the pups when they saw her barking at people who showed up at my house. So, there are a variety of factors involved.

If someone has puppies at their home and they have no papers for any of the dogs how much should they charge?

    • admin says:

$0. It is unlikely that they are going to be able to sell them. They may- I mean there is a sucker born every minute. But, hopefully they are simply charging for their time and shots.

hi. how much would a baby German Shepherd be, like a newborn or a couple weeks old?

    • admin says:

Hi.. A GSD puppy should never, ever be taken away from their mother before 7-8 weeks of age.

Hey are u interested in buying a 5 week old German. Shepherd. Pure breed

      • admin says:

I do hope that is a bad joke. A 5 week old GSD should never be separated from their mother. Obviously, the pup should be free and the irresponsible owner should make a very large donation to the new caregiver.

I have a female and male German Shepard Puppies. She is delivering puppies right now as we speak…. but I am unsure of what to ask for the puppies when they are ready to go. (not letting go to new homes til 9 weeks old for shot reasons) She has 4 that are a silverish blue and 2 that are solid black. I have papers for the parents and I want to ask a reasonable price but unsure of what they go for or what to ask for these pup. Any advice I can get is greatly appreciated.

I’m looking to buy a german shepherd for a family pet and want to make a good choice, however , I’ve narrowed it down to 4 dogs, all are precious and all claim to be akc registered but are much different price wise and size … they range from 450-800 , does 800 buy a better dog or is the akc registration good enough ? I’m traveling 3 hours one way tomorrow to go meet the more expensive pup but don’t know if I’m wasting an opportunity to buy one for less, closet to home . Thanks for any insight in advance !!
